For the braveheart: Sunanda, wife of late Mallikarjun, police constable, receiving the medal from Governor Rameshwar Thakur. at Police Flag Day in Bangalore on Wednesday. Bangalore: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Wednesday announced that the Government’s contribution to the Police Welfare Fund will be raised from the existing Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 1 crore. He was speaking after presenting the Chief Minister’s medals to policemen at the Police Flag Day celebrations held at the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) grounds in Koramangala here. “Karnataka Police have started various programmes to sensitise the police force towards the needs of society. Modernisation is an important tool to meet the future challenges. The State Police can take pride for being the first in the country to connect the police stations and police units through computer network. It has got the distinction of being the first State to ensure 100 per cent computerisation in its functioning,” the Governor said. Mr. Thakur said that Karnataka Police, in the last few years, has faced many security challenges. Inimical forces have tried to infringe on the security of the people and public property. State police has not only neutralised these forces, but also stopped the growth of these forces. “I am sure that the police will continue to upgrade their performance to cope with the requirements of various developments which the society is witnessing,” he added. The Governor awarded Chief Minister’s Medal to 76 policemen in the State. A medal was posthumously conferred on constable Mallikarjun of Raichur district, who was killed on duty. Speaking to The Hindu, Mallikarjun’s wife Sunanda, who received the medal, said the Government had conferred the medal recognising the services of her husband. The Government should punish the people who are responsible for my husband’s death. This will be a true tribute to him, she said. Sunanda married Mallikarjun just one and a half years back. Mallikarjun was murdered while he was taking an accused to the Mudhol police station in Raichur district on December 6, 2007. “This is like a lifetime award for every police officer,” said M. Krishnappa, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Malleshwaram Sub-Division, Bangalore, who received the medal.
