Sojourn at textile city: The delegates from foreign countries attending the 19th Congress of Communist Party of India (Marxist) taking a look at a garment factory in Tirupur on Wednesday. — TIRUPUR: A 48-member delegation from various countries who are attending the 19th Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) visited garment factories and a textile mill in the knitwear hub of Tirupur on Wednesday. The delegation visited Santhosh Meenakshi Textile Mills. They took a look around garment units at Netaji Apparel Park, near here, where hundreds of workers owing allegiance to the Centre for Indian Trade Unions, a labour wing of the CPI(M) accorded rousing reception to them. The delegates of Communist Parties from 25 countries across the globe interacted with tailors, knitting machine operators and other workers of the garment units. Terrie Albano, National Board Member of the Communist Party of the United States of America, told The Hindu that she was so glad to meet the workers at the garment factory. “I will always remember the faces of young women and men, who were on their work at the garment unit. It seems they are very productive and enjoying clean working atmosphere,” she said. Stating that the workers are in safe and healthy condition, Ms. Albano was hopeful that the Indian people and workers were smart and concerned enough to overcome the environmental and energy challenges. Ms. Albano, who had attended the Communist Party of India’s Congress in Hyderabad recently, said that the Communist parties were very vibrant in India. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party was thrown out of power, there are new possibilities to make gains for the working class and farmers. Tirupur Exporters’ Association hosted a lunch for the delegates. Welcoming the representatives of Communist Parties from different countries, its president A. Sakthivel said they were not only their ‘guests’ but also their ‘customers.’ He said the tremendous growth in knitwear exports from the small town could not have been achieved without the help of workers and trade unions.
