Centre should quit over “patronised” price rise: JD(U)

NEW DELHI: Accusing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of having “miserably failed” to contain skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, fruits and vegetables, the Janata Dal(United) on Wednesday sought the resignation of the Congress-led coalition Government at the Centre.

Stating that the unprecedented price rise had made life hell for the common man, Janata Dal (U) president Sharad Yadav told a press conference that his party would launch a nationwide agitation against the “failure” of the Manmohan Singh government to tackle the situation and to protest against the unchecked and “patronised” price rise.

“We will hold a massive demonstration in Delhi on April 8 and then take to the streets all over the country,” he said.

“The present Congress-led Government has no alternative but to go back to the people for votes so that after the suicides by farmers, this trend does not catch up with the consumers who are facing one of the worst times and pressures to have two square meals daily,” Mr. Yadav said.

Accusing the Centre of failure on all fronts, from prices of essential commodities to food management, he said there was nothing but misery for the common man. “The prices of vegetables, fruits, pulses and oils have increased more than 100 per cent during the last three to four years. The people are fed up with the policies and the working of the UPA government as basic items had gone beyond the reach of the common man.”

Mr. Yadav alleged that the “wrong economic policies” and “total mismanagement” of the Public Distribution System had led to shortage and price rise of many essential commodities.
