Early gains not held on BSE

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange’s sensitive index failed to hold on to significant early gains, but still managed to end the day on a positive note and ended higher by nearly 124 points.

The 30-share index closed at 15750.40, up 123.78 points from Tuesday’s close of 15626.62.

Heavy selling onslaught by foreign institutional investors in the latter part of the day chopped off the gains, marketmen said.

Rupee moves up

The Indian rupee gained 14 paise to close below the 40 level at 39.97/98 against the dollar on Wednesday amidst a rise in stock markets.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the Indian unit moved in a range of 40.03 and 39.84 during the day after resuming firm at 39.93/95 a dollar from Monday’s close of 40.11/12 a dollar. — PTI
