Tikait ‘surrenders’, out on bail

Atiq Khan

Mahendra Singh Tikait

LUCKNOW: Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Mahendra Singh Tikait on Wednesday “surrendered” in the Bijnor court and was later released on bail. He had been charged with making a derogatory reference to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati at a farmers’ rally in Bijnor on Sunday. A case was filed under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

However, Ms. Mayawati said the BKU leader was arrested, adding the law would take its course. She said Mr. Tikait had apologised for his remarks.

Describing the BKU leader as a commoner (mamooli sa aadmi), she told a press conference here that he had the audacity to make a casteist remark against a “Dalit Chief Minister.”
