5 held for cloning credit cards

Staff Reporter

They caused a loss of about Rs.30 lakh to various banks

NEW DELHI: Five young men who allegedly used cloned credit cards to withdraw money from the accounts of genuine card holders in the United Kingdom in connivance with shopkeepers, causing a loss of about Rs.30 lakh to various banks, have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police. The police claim to have seized 21 such credit cards from them.

The Crime Branch recently received a tip-off about a gang that used cloned credit cards to cheat banks. The miscreants would in connivance with certain shopkeepers get the cards swiped showing that they had made purchases and then they would get the money back by paying some commission to the shopkeepers.

Four of the accused were arrested when they were travelling a Maruti Wagon-R at Netaji Subhash Place. They were identified as Vivek Prasad, Nafees Ahmed, Raju Khan and Brijesh Yadav. Several cloned cards were seized from them. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement and disclosed that the cards were created using the data extracted from the genuine ones using “skimmers”.

At their instance, the police arrested a shopkeeper, Dildar Hussain.

Accused Vivek disclosed that he used to procure the cloned credit cards from Loknathan, who keeps shuttling between India and the United Kingdom. Vivek allegedly roped in Nafees Ahmed and other people to get the cards swiped by shopkeepers by giving them a cut of about 5 per cent and get back the money. Vivek would take 80 per cent of the money and would send half of it to Loknathan via Western Union. The rest of the amount would be distributed among the other gang members.
