KOCHI: Those displaced in Kadamakkudy village for the connectivity of the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) project would receive the compensation as per the rehabilitation package declared by the State government on Friday, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has said. Fiftythree families in the village, including Moolamppilly and Kothad, which would lose their houses, will receive Rs.50,000, towards rent for 10 months at the rate of Rs.5,000 per month, and another Rs.10,000 for shifting their possessions. Contrary to earlier reports, the Cochin Port Trust would handover cheques for compensation. Initial planThe initial plan was to make available the requisite fund — close to Rs.32 lakh — from the State government’s contingency fund. This plan, however, did not work for want of necessary permission from the finance department. Cheques will be handed over at the office of the special tahsildar for ICTT project at Udyogamandal. The Collector asked the beneficiaries to produce documents proving identity for receiving the compensation. Onus on familiesIn the case of nine families, the forceful removal of whom led to an uproar, the Collector said that they would have to decide without delay between the higher price for their land fixed by the District Level Purchasing Committee and the lesser amount provided under the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act. As a mark of protest against their forceful eviction, these families had not yet accepted the price for their land acquired by the district administration.
