KOCHI: The Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) aims to improve its operations in all fields starting from distribution of seeds to marketing during the current financial year for which a budget with expected revenue of nearly Rs.31.96 crore and estimated expenditure of Rs.31.88 crore was approved by the board on Wednesday. A statement said here that that the budget was approved at a meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran. The VFPCK also decided to distribute seeds free of cost to farmers whose crops suffered from summer rain. Insurance schemeA new insurance programme to cover banana and vegetable plantations on a small premium too has been introduced this year for the whole of Kerala. It has set aside Rs.1.75 crore for encouraging and creating awareness about organic farming methods and practices. Expansion of the farmers’ marketing setups will get Rs.4.50 crore and Rs.1 crore will be used for retail sale of fruits and vegetables. A sum of Rs.4.54 crore is earmarked for encouraging farmers to take up banana cultivation and provide them subsidy and 50,000 drumstick stems will be distributed during the current year to spread the cultivation of drumsticks in Kerala under the ‘Muttathoru Muringa’ project. More than Rs.90 lakh is set aside for improving the quality of planting materials. Seed production is expected to be 22 tonnes during the year.
