PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Wednesday told the Assembly that the government would continue to make necessary efforts to seek special category Statehood for Puducherry. Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s Address, he said the government was aware of the views of all the members on the issue. “We will certainly take steps to seek special Statehood status after consulting all concerned,” he added. Mr. Rangasamy recalled that the issue was discussed during the previous Assembly session also. A letter had already been handed over to the Prime Minister stressing the need for more powers and Statehood for Puducherry. The government would also consider the demand that all MLAs should call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi to highlight the importance of the demand, he said. The Union Territory had achieved significant progress in per capita income, education, health and education, he said. However, members belonging to the DMK, the PMK, the PMC, the CPI and the AIADMK disputed the claim.
