Water supply stopped to Hyderabad; restoration efforts on war-footing
|
NALGONDA: Officials had to stop water supply to Hyderabad due to water leakage through a cavity -- ‘bunga’ in irrigation parlance – at the main canal of the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project at Pedda Adisarlapally.
“We are taking all measures on a war-footing to restore water supply today itself,” Executive Engineer (AMRP) B. Jagadeswar told on Wednesday evening.
Officials of the Irrigation Department and the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board were camping at the spot to attend to the problem. “The cavity (bunga) on the bed of the left earth bank would have led to a breach, had we failed to notice it on time. We tried our best to continue the water supply to Hyderabad but we couldn’t do so due to the severity of the problem,” the EE said.
100 workers
More than 100 workers and officials were engaged in plugging the cavity and strengthening the embankment, he said.
“We arranged a ring bund and rectified the problem,” the EE claimed. The problem had been detected by a farmer on March 31.
“As the depth of the cavity is 2.4 metres, we had to stop the water supply,” the official clarified.
