Haldia Petrochemicals strike proposal deferred
Special Correspondent
Kolkata: The proposed strike called at Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd., West Bengal’s showpiece industrial project, has been ‘deferred’. Had the strike, called on April 8, materialised, it would have been the first such unrest in the eight-year-old history of the company. The strike call was given by the local unit of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions in Haldia.
It was given at a time when senior party leadership, barring veteran leader Jyoti Basu, were away in Coimbatore. The West Bengal government has a majority 51.7 per cent holding in HPL, eastern India’s only petrochemical company, in which the Tatas and India Oil Corporation too have some holdings. Efforts to contact the union representative were futile.
