Pune CPI(M) office attacked
Special Correspondent
MUMBAI: Three activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were injured when its Pune office was attacked allegedly by about 40 persons from the Sangh Parivar on Wednesday afternoon. The injured were hospitalised.
“The three comrades tried to stop the attackers, armed with sticks and maybe other weapons, and got beaten up,” district secretary Ajit Abhyankar told The Hindu on the phone.
He said the attackers, shouting anti-Communist slogans, ransacked the office at Narayan Peth in the old city area, and threw about leaflets referring to a Kannur (in Kerala) incident. They were accompanied by a videographer who filmed the attack.
Mr. Abhyankar said that at a protest meeting held in Pune three days ago, Uday Patwardhan, a senior leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, threatened to destroy every CPI(M) office.
In Coimbatore, the CPI(M) Congress condemned the attack on the party office in Pune and demanded stern action against those involved.
In a statement, the party said RSS men burnt CPI(M) flags at Nandurbar two days ago.
