Billiards & Snooker
Kamal Chawla. CHENNAI: Kamal Chawla won the inaugural John W. Roberts invitation Open snooker tournament at the Madras United Club here on Wednesday. The 28-year-old from Western Railway (Bhopal) overcame a spirited challenge from Shahbaaz Adil Khan of West Bengal 44-69, 67-22, 40-59, 72-42, 68-38, 45-66, 77-34, 94-80 in the final. Shahbaaz, the reigning junior National billiards champion was leading by two frames to one, when Kamal staged a fightback. After losing the seventh frame pretty tamely, Shahbaaz did wonderfully well in the next to recover from being down 69-0 to even take a lead 79-69 at one point, but Kamal’s 63 points in two visits in the penultimate frame stood him in good stead in the final analysis. The winner took home Rs. 14,000, while the runner-up received Rs. 7500. Mr. Ajit Kumbhat, President, Madras United Club, gave away the prizes. Other results (semifinals): Shahbaaz bt Nadeem Ahmed (TNBSA) 44-70, 66-22, 59-27, 42-74, 64-41, 50-58, 59-12, 69-44; Kamal bt Rafath Habib (SRSA) 75-49, 61-47, 21-67, 66-39, 54-36, 37-74, 36-91, 36-61, 61-19. — Principal Correspondent
