120 temples being renovated: Collector

Philanthropists willing to restore several ancient temples

NAGAPATTINAM: As many as 120 temples are now being renovated in various parts of Nagapattinam district with contributions from donors and Government and kumbabhishekam of these temples will be performed this year, said Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar on Wednesday.

‘Avvaiyar Vizha’

Presiding over the poetess ‘Avvaiyar Vizha’ at Thulasiapattinam village near Vedaranyam in the district organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the Collector said that kumbabhishekam was performed to 102 temples in the district last year and the Government had spent Rs.77.40 lakh for this purpose.

He pointed out that a number of philanthropists had come forward to renovate several ancient temples in the district.

Mr. Jawahar said that there were 2,037 temples under the control of HRCE Department in the district and 790 employees had been posted for these temples.

The HRCE Department is also taking steps for renovating the temples that were in dilapidated condition, he said.

A.K.S. Vijayan, MP, said that he would allocate funds from the MP’s local area development fund for construction of a platform for the Avvaiyar Temple in Thulasiapattinam village.
