THENI: A total of 1.30 lakh households in the district had been given access to banking services through Total Financial Inclusion scheme by March. Bank accounts had been opened for all households. With this, the district had achieved hundred per cent achievement under this scheme, said Collector S.J. Chiru.
In a release here on Thursday, he said that 3.08 households were identified in the district to extend banking services in 2007. Already, 1.77 lakh households had bank accounts. With effective cooperation of block level administration, self- help groups and non-governmental organisations, the bankers have opened savings bank no-frill accounts freely to remaining 1.30 lakh households.
This facility would help the poor to use services of banks.
Many uses
Moreover, financial assistance such as scholarships and wages to workers under NREGP scheme was disbursed either through account payee cheques or saving bank account credit, the Collector added. “Our aim is to make every household have one savings bank account in any one of the banks in the district to avail the banking services.”
People in urban and rural areas, SHG members, college students were motivated to open savings accounts banks near their area.
Nine nationalised banks with 53 branches, 19 private banks with 32 branches, 13 cooperative banks and 81 primary agriculture cooperative banks have been extending banking services to people in the district.
