Coffee growers oppose move to fix minimum wages

Special Correspondent

YERCAUD: The coffee growers of Shevaroys Hills has strongly objected to the State Government’s proposal to fix minimum wages for workers as Rs. 100.52 in coffee plantations and called it unreasonable that will lead to collapse of coffee industry itself.

According to Mr. Vijayan Rajesh, Chairman of Shevaroy Planters Association here, the fixation of minimum wages by the Government would result in reduction of employment.

Existing wages

The existing minimum wages is Rs. 64.58 against the proposed hike of Rs 100.52. The proposed hike of 55 per cent in wages will severely affect the industry as it has just recouped from the severe financial crises caused by years of low prices and often below the production cost.

In addition to the high wages, the growers have to bear other allowances such as housing, medical, bonus, provident fund and gratuity etc., says Mr. Vijayan Rajesh.

He also points out that taking into account the backwardness of Shevaroys hills, Thalanar and Palani hills, the Government in the past had given special considerations in terms of wages.

The current minimum wages in Karnataka is Rs. 82.39, he says.

The yield of coffee in Shevaroys is very low when compared to other plantations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

The hill receives scant rainfall and the soil is shallow. Hence the average yield an acre here is 101 to 121 kg an acre for small growers and 250 kg for medium and large growers. The national average, however, is 344 to 364 kg.

Planters claim the proposed new minimum wages as unviable and ask the Government to fix them lower than that of Karnataka.
