Eraiyur Catholics agree to sink differences

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The warring factions of Catholics at Eraiyur near Ulundurpet decided to sink their differences at a peace committee meeting held there on Wednesday.

Archdiocese representative C. Antonysamy, parish priests, panchayat president Arokkiyadas, Vanniya Christians, Dalit Christians and police officers attended the meeting.

It decided to allow funeral processions of both sections through the common path leading to the Jebamalai church with certain conditions -- the procession should be taken out without any beating of drums, bursting of crackers and showering of flowers and garlands on the path. After the funeral the mourners should not return via the same path but should take another route.

The thoomba (body carrier) kept at the Jebamalai church will be at the disposal of all Christians. However, at the cemetery, the existing practice will continue -- separate burial grounds. If the church buys land for another cemetery, it will be declared a common facility.

On extension of car processions during church festivities, it has been decided to continue with the present arrangement till a consensus emerges. (The car procession skips habitations of Dalit Christians).

However, the church will collect festival fees from all Christians.

As for re-opening of the Jebamalai church (it has remained closed from the last week of March) both sections will soon hold talks with Archbishop A. Anandarayan.
