Training programme on system of rice intensification concludes

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Nearly 100 artisans from five river sub-basins were trained to make SRI (System of Rice Intensification) Marker and Rotary Weeder during a 10-day training that culminated earlier this week at the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute (AECRI), Kumulur, a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

The training was offered under IAMWARM (Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management) project instituted by the State Government with World Bank funding. The project is executed by the university. The State Government and TNAU are jointly working to popularise the SRI method of paddy cultivation.

According to the Dean of AECRI K. Rangasamy, introduction of SRI, a new technique, has resulted in importance for paddy cultivation. Under this system, only one young seedling is planted in a hill. Also the row to row and plant to plant spacing are maintained. In SRI, weeding is carried out by the manually operated weeder.

Fertiliser and water usage are less in SRI and the yield is increased by about 25 per cent. The SRI marker is used for planting the seedling in a specified place. It is a simple tool that creates the impression of square shape on the field when rolled over wetland.

Planting will be carried out on the grid of the square. For weeding operations, rotary weeder is being popularised.

C. Jayaraman, Dean, Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, Navalur Kuttapattu, addressed the valedictory and gave away certificates to the participants.
