COIMBATORE: Facilities created at a total cost of Rs. 60 crore for foundries, pumpset and engineering units here will be inaugurated on April 5. The works were taken up under the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme of the Union Government and implemented by the Coimbatore Industrial Infrastructure Association. In less than three years, the association has established two common tool rooms and a business centre and created common facilities at three foundry parks and the Small Industries’ Testing and Research Centre (Si’Tarc). G. Rajendran, president of the association, told presspersons here on Thursday that foundry parks were coming up at Arasur, Kallapalayam and Manickampalayam to house nearly 200 small foundries. The association took up road laying, building of office premises, meeting halls, canteens and weigh bridge works. The foundries were likely to start functioning at the parks in a year. The business centre and additional facilities at the Si’Tarc were completed over a year ago and already used by the small-scale units here. The common tool room at Avarampalayam, which had been used by about 70 industries in the last three months, would soon get a rapid prototyping machine. “The engineering capability of the units here has been improved by the project,” said D. Balasundaram, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore. It would reduce the product development duration for the units, bring in additional investments and increase employment with better business opportunities. The project had Rs. 39.39 crore assistance from the Centre and Rs. 1.21 crore from the State Government. The annual turnover of the foundry and pumpset industry here was now Rs. 3,200 crore and this was expected to go up by Rs. 1,500 crore annually with additional exports and domestic business. An exhibition of imported pumpsets used for non-agricultural or domestic purposes would be held on April 6 and 7. Nearly 40 samples would be on display.
