Transplantation of rare tree carried out

R. Sairam

Factors such as age, type and soil variety considered during the process

Safe shift: The tree on West Chithirai Street that posed a threat to the stability of the West Tower of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai.

MADURAI: A possible threat in the form of a tree to the stability of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in general and to the West Tower in particular has now been transplanted and taken care of.

‘Kal Alamaram,’ a species of banyan tree – Ficus tomentosa – located on the West Chithirai Street, could have posed a threat in the long term.

Worshipped by some locals

“As the tree belonged to a rare species and was also worshipped by some locals, we did not want to chop it down. We sought the technical expertise from a Chennai-based organisation, with which we have been working for quite some time now, and transplanted the tree from the West Chithirai Street to our farm at Koodal Sengulam near the airport,” B. Raja, Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, and Executive Officer of the temple, said here on Wednesday.

N. Arulananthan, Education Officer of C.P.R. Environment Education Centre, the organisation which lent its expertise to the temple, said that factors such as the tree’s age, type and soil variety were considered during the process.

He added that the organisation had planted 692 trees of 27 varieties – one for each of the 27 ‘nakshatrams’ (stars) -- creating a ‘Nakshatra Thottam’ for devotees.

Another 24 would be planted in the coming months.

It was transplanted about a month ago after trimming it a bit and now the tree had survived and taken roots at its new home, said Mr. Raja.
