Cauvery water: hearing on residents’ plea adjourned

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday adjourned to next week petitions by a housing society and several residents of erstwhile city municipal councils, bordering Bangalore, challenging the levy of penalty on them by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for providing them Cauvery water.

When the matter came up, Poorna Prajna House Building Cooperative Society and several house owners said they had already represented to the State Government urging it to withdraw the penalty levied on them for giving them Cauvery water.

They said the State had indicated that it would take a decision on doing away with the penalty and urged the court to adjourn the case till then. Justice A.S. Bopanna adjourned further hearing on the case.

Adjourned

Justice N. Ananda adjourned a criminal petition by B. Krishna Bhat of Bangalore seeking a stay of proceedings against him by a lower court in Bangalore.

Mr. Bhat said a magistrate court in Bangalore had initiated proceedings against him following a complaint by Doddanna of Karnataka Pradesh Kurubara Sangha. Mr. Doddanna claimed that Mr. Bhat had made derogatory statements against the Kuruba community during the height of the Kanaka Gopura controversy.

Mr. Doddanna had filed a complaint against Mr. Bhat with the Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, who in turn had referred it to the Cubbon Park police. Subsequently, the case was posted before the magistrate court.

When the matter came up, Mr. Justice Ananda noted that Mr. Bhat had already apologised for his remarks and sought to know from the Government advocate on whether the Government still wanted to prosecute the case.
