Relief package announced for chilli farmers

Some 10 lakh quintals affected by rain: Collector


GUNTUR: The State government has announced a compensatory package of Rs.40 crores to provide relief to chilli farmers who suffered losses in the recent rains, MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao has said. The package would cover tenant farmers too. The modalities of the package were being worked out and farmers would get the amount within a week, he told reporters here on Thursday.

The MP, along with Agricultural Market Committee chairman Lella Appi Reddy, MLC T.G.V. Krishna Reddy and former APIIC chairman Ambati Rambabu, met district Collector B. Venkatesham and requested him to expedite the process of identification of the beneficiaries.

Enumeration on

The Collector said that the government was considering various factors that would exactly identify farmers who suffered extensive damage and enumerate the losses. Farmers could be identified on the basis of receipts issued at the market yard, voter identification cards and on the basis of enumeration done by local village revenue officers, he said.

A meeting with various stakeholders, bankers, traders and farmers would be held on Friday to discuss the modalities, he said. The Collector, in his report, said that 10 lakh quintals of chilli was affected by the untimely rains, out of which six lakh quintals was completely destroyed.
