NEDUMBASSERY: The flights services from the Cochin International Airport to Middle East destinations were partially hit when the conveyor belt system for baggage handling at the international departure terminal broke down for a couple of hours on Thursday morning. The services by national as well as international carriers were delayed by 30 minutes to one hour due to the system malfunctioning. The Kuwait Airways flight scheduled for 7.45 a.m. could depart only at 8.20 a.m., whereas the departure of a Dammam-bound Air India flight was delayed by 50 minutes. Services of other airlines including Oman Airways and Air India Express were also affected. An airline official said that the incident coupled with lack of adequate staff at emigration counters took its toll on the operation of services. Airport Director A.C.K. Nair, however, denied reports that flight services were disrupted stating that the staff were immediately pressed into service to deal with baggage handling after the unexpected breakdown. He said that the technical glitch in the terminal was fixed immediately. Necessary steps would be taken to meet the shortage of staff at the emigration clearance counters during peak seasons.
