Robbery bid foiled

VISAKHAPATNAM: What could have been a robbery was averted with the timely intervention of the police.

B.D. Satyanandam, a retired DEO, is living with his wife Kempu, who is a retired teacher, at Vinayak Nagar at Peda Gantyada VUDA Colony. Around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, five persons, armed with knives and sticks, gained entry into the house and threatened the couple.

Meanwhile, some passer-by noticed the commotion at the house and informed the New Port Police. The police rushed to the scene and caught the five accused. New Port Circle-Inspect Shaik Hussain said that one of the five accused persons had worked as driver for the retired DEO. Another accused hatched the conspiracy. The accused had targeted the house as it was a little away from other houses and the couple was senior citizens.

Killed in accident

A youth was killed in a road accident on the National Highway near Satyam Centre (Old TB Hospital junction) on Thursday.

U. Asirayya, 28, was pillion riding on the motorcycle of M. Mahesh. They were going towards Gurudwara junction when a van hit the motorcycle from behind. Asirayya sustained grievous head injuries and was declared dead on being taken to the King George Hospital. The motorcyclist escaped with simple injuries.

Run over

A medical representative Mrudula, 20, was killed in a road accident near Vepagunta on Thursday night.

The girl was driving her Kinetic Honda while a youth was pillion riding. They were going from Pendurthy towards Gopalapatnam. At Vepagunta junction, the youth had to get down. The youth reportedly jumped off the vehicle even before the scooter stopped, which resulted in the girl losing control and fell on the road along with the vehicle.

A city bus coming from behind ran over her. The youth was also injured.
