TIRUCHI: In an attempt to create health and hygiene awareness among adolescents, the rural wing of K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College has planned a host of medical and counselling camps for the village adolescents. The camps would get off to a start soon after the launch of NSS unit at the college. As a pilot activity, 50 students comprising the rural wing visited villages near Thanjavur district for an extensive medical screening camp. Counselling keyCounselling for adolescents by the medical college students would be the key activity of the NSS unit of the college, which is stated to receive registration next month by M. G. R. Medical University. The students, to be part of NSS unit, would be trained to impart health education and go on a monthly visit to identified villages, college Dean P. Ravishankar told The Hindu. “Though doctors conducting medical camps deal with adolescence issues, we feel peer group counsellors will do good to them. Our students will have one-to-one counselling with the youths at the camps. This will also be a training ground for the to-be-doctors,” said college Vice-Principal Prabhu Elango.
