Proposal made by Kancheepuram district police Some companies have offered to fund the project KANCHEEPURAM: The Kancheepuram district police have mooted a proposal to install traffic signal lights at the important junctions on Grand Southern Trunk Road between Peerkankaranai and Chengalpattu to make this stretch safe for road users, particularly pedestrians. Talking to reporters here at the Paalur police station near Chengalpattu on Thursday, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Kancheepuram Range) E. Masanamuthu said a study of accidents that had taken place on this stretch revealed that pedestrians crossing the National Highway at Vandalur, Gudvancheri and Singaperumalkoil were the major victims. This was primarily owing to the non-availability of traffic signals and zebra crossing facilities. Superintendent of Police K. Periaiya, who was also present at the press briefing, said inadequate illumination at important places along this stretch also compounded the problem. The police had written to the district administration to permit them to go ahead with the proposal as some of the companies functioning along this stretch had offered to fund the project. At the same time, the number of accidents on the GST Road near Madurantakam had come down drastically after the inauguration of a flyover on the northern side of the town, Mr. Periaiya said. On the practice of some State Transport Corporation buses coming from Achirapakkam side entering the town on the wrong side of the GST Road instead of taking the flyover, Mr. Periaiya said instruction would be issued to STC authorities to ensure that their drivers use the flyover to enter the town. As far as Chengalpattu was concerned, the police would install traffic signal lights at the Kancheepuram Road junction and Raatinakinaru junction. Sustained growth of vehicle population in the town clubbed with floating vehicle population hampered smooth flow of traffic at Chengalpattu, where the main thoroughfares were not wide enough, he said. The strength of the traffic police wing in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu had increased recently, taking into consideration the need to regulate traffic flow through these towns, Mr. Masanamuthu said. The DIG said the police had taken up enumeration of places where Kannadigas lived in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur and security would be provided to them.
