NLC workers’ stir will end soon: Veeraswami

Special Correspondent

1800 contract labourers court arrest on day six

NEYVELI: The ongoing strike by contract labourers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation will end soon, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami informed the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a question from T. Velmurugan (PMK), Mr. Veeraswami said he had spoken to Union Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayan Rao, who had assured him that the issues leading to the stir would be sorted out in a week.

Mr. Velmurugan wanted Mr. Veeraswami to be part of the negotiations, a demand that was accepted by the Minister, who said he would be part of the talks in Chennai along with Dr. Rao and would invite trade union leaders. The issue would be sorted out amicably. About 1,800 contract labourers, including 24 women working in the horticulture section of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, courted arrest at Thermal Power Station-II on Thursday.

In the morning, they took out a procession from the Mandarakuppam bus stand to the power unit to stage a demonstration. The police took them into preventive custody. They were freed in the evening.

The strike involving 13,000 contract labourers entered the sixth day. It is in support of their demands, including regularisation of service, payment of bonus, allotment of houses and equal pay for equal work. Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress P. Kuppuswamy said the talks were unnecessarily stretched as the NLC management had sought a clarification from the Madras High Court on regularisation of the contract labourers.

Mr. Kuppuswamy said the court had given the management 12 weeks to prepare a list of contract labourers eligible for regularisation. Even after six weeks, the management had not done anything.

The unions see the NLC move to seek a clarification as a delaying tactic and are opposing it.

Collector Rajendra Ratnoo, who is camping at Neyveli, held a third round of talks on Thursday evening. The second round of talks that started on Wednesday evening went on till 3 a.m. on Thursday without arriving at a solution.
