Online power bill payment facility soon: Minister

Special Correspondent

Consumer will be able to pay from anywhere, says Veeraswami

90 sub-stations to be set up in

2008-09

Staggered holidays to end on May 1

CHENNAI: Tired of long queues in your power payment centre? Well, in a few months from now, this could well be a thing of the past.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami informed the Assembly on Thursday that the State Electricity Board was planning to offer online payment facility once all the offices of the Board were networked. This would help a consumer to make the payment from anywhere.

On DMDK leader Vijayakant’s demand that people be allowed to make the payment each month, he said the facility was introduced by former Minister Panruti Ramachandran in 1987 and he now was a front ranking leader of the DMDK. There was no move to change the billing process.

The government will set up 90 substations in 2008-09 to improve the quality of power supply across the State, he said, replying to the demands for grants for the Power Ministry. This was the largest number to be installed in a year. The substations would be named after former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

Mr. Veeraswami said the staggered holidays industries were asked to adopt in view of the poor power situation, would end on May 1. This was because the State had made adequate plans to tackle the summer demand by buying power from other States. It had worked out long-term plans through the merchant power project route for a huge capacity addition.

Because of the huge capacity addition envisaged and since part of this production would be conveyed to the southern grid, the State had to set up a transmission corporation. This was exclusively meant to strengthen the transmission lines. There was no question of the corporation being a private entity, he said. The Electricity Board chairman would also head the corporation.

AIADMK walkout

Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a walkout from the Assembly after Deputy Speaker V.P. Duraisamy told former Minister R. Viswanathan to end his speech on the demand for grants to the Energy Department. When Mr. Viswanathan wanted to talk further, Mr. Duraisamy pointed out that the member spoke for 20 minutes without any intervention. He was given a grace time of two minutes to complete his speech.

Unsatisfied with the Deputy Speaker’s ruling, the AIADMK members, led by the deputy leader O. Paneerselvam, staged a walkout.

Later Speaker R. Avudaiappan quoted party-wise statistics of speakers to drive home the point that the AIADMK had been given enough time and opportunity to address the House.
