EXCELLENT DEPICTION: Ramesh Aravind with co-stars in ‘Accident’. Film: Accident Director: Ramesh Aravind Cast: Ramesh Aravind, Mohan, H.G. Dattatreya, Rajendra Karanth, Dinesh Baboo Rekha, Puja Gandhi and Sudharani Elements that can be traced in Agatha Christie’s plot construction, Alfred Hitchcock’s sense of suspense, Sherlock Holmes’s method of logical deduction and James Bond’s dash make director-actor Ramesh Aravind’s Accident hold one’s attention for two hours. Exposed to various schools of filmmaking and acting, Ramesh Aravind executes his project deftly with a touch of class and invites his audience to the mind game even as he intersperses the story with comedy, romance and angst. The film is all about how happy-go-lucky radio jockey Sawanth (Ramesh Aravind) is forced to turn detective following the death of his wife Vasundhara (Rekha) and another man in an accident. At the hands of Ramesh Aravind, the otherwise coarse plot becomes a poignant story punctuated with police deception, fraudulent games and questionable relationships with a marked decency and decorum. Ramesh employs an intelligent narrative mode to win over his audience giving due respect to their intelligence even as he teases them. Right from the point Sawanth convinces himself that his wife’s death is not an accident, the director knows that audience will engage themselves in the detection game along with the hero. As a matter of fun, he makes the character of a mad old man, played by Dattatreya, represent audience’s confusion in tracking the culprit. In Rajendra Karanth, who plays the comically cruel politician, Kannada cinema has found another sound artiste. K.N.VENKATASUBBA RAO
