Take advantage of bank services, people told

ATTUR: People in the rural areas should take full advantage of the services extended by banks to take up income generation activities and enhance their quality of life, Collector N.Mathivanan has said.
Declaring open the service branch of the Indian Bank in Ammampalayam village near here on Thursday, he said that the branch would facilitate people in Ammampalayam and surrounding villages to open bank account and get various banking services. The branch would also extend non-banking services including commodities market information, guidance on cultivation, and information on education, health, insurance and industry. It would also extend financial advisory services to the people.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) had already adopted the Ammampalayam village. The NABARD and Indian Bank would implement a number of schemes for the development of the village, he added.
Mr. Mathivanan said that the annual credit plan prepared by the Indian Bank for the fiscal 2008-09 had accorded top priority for the development of rural areas, self-help groups and tribal people. The total credit outlay was fixed at Rs. 1180.57 crore. Of the total credit outlay, it was planned to disburse Rs. 540.96 crore in rural areas.
The agriculture and allied activities were given importance and a sum of Rs. 739.91 crore was earmarked, constituting 62.68 per cent of the total plan.
The non-farm sector, mainly industries, would receive Rs. 190.25 crore, while other priority sectors including education and housing would get Rs. 250.41 crore, he said. Indian Bank Deputy General Manager R. Mahadevan presided.
