Karaikudi decked up for Sonia Gandhi’s visit today

KARAIKUDI: Karaikudi wears a festive look to receive the United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday.
It is on about 300 acres of prime land donated by philanthropist RM. Alagappa Chettiar, who has even donated his house for common cause, the famous Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI), Alagappa University and a host of institutions are functioning in Karaikudi.
In this line, the Alagappa University has got one more gift, this time from the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, who has constructed an auditorium at a cost of about Rs.3 crore.
Besides opening the auditorium, Mrs. Gandhi will attend a public meeting to be organised by the Congress at Karaikudi.
A helipad has been readied at the Alagappa Model School ground, where she will land at 3 p.m. The town has been brought under the security blanket following her visit.
Superintendent of Police (in-charge), R. Thirugnanam, said refugee camps in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and other districts were being closely monitored.
