Encroached land resumed

The pond used for fish farming at the land recovered at Ayilakkad in Malappuram.

MALAPPURAM: The district revenue authorities have recovered more than five acres encroached upon by a person at Ayilakkad near Edappal in the district.

The land containing a large pond was occupied by Kadavil Valappil Sakeer Husain, son of K.V. Mohammed, for many years.

The revenue authorities identified the encroached property and initiated recovery action in the wake of the recent Munnar eviction drive.

Mr. Husain had approached the High Court against eviction but the court left the matter for the District Collector to decide. District Collector M.C. Mohandas and his team took possession of the land a couple of days ago, despite fears that the action would lead to a showdown.

The reclaimed land in survey number one at Ayilakkad desam in Edappal village of Ponnani taluk had a mini-mosque and a school.

The revenue authorities said the mosque and the school were erected within the 5.4 acres in order to escape eviction.

Fearing public outcry, the revenue authorities did not recover the land on which the mosque and the school were erected.

“We have referred the matter to the government. We’ll take a decision based on the government’s advice,” said Mr. Mohandas. The revenue authorities have so far recovered 5.23 acres from Mr. Husain.

The encroached land had 200-odd coconut trees, several dozens of plantains and a large pond used for fishery farming.

The fish farm was handed over to the Department of Fisheries after recovery.

The revenue authorities auctioned off 600-odd coconuts plucked from the recovered land.

The Deputy Director of Fisheries will auction of the fish in the farm on Tuesday. Different varieties of fish, including prawns, are being bred in that farm.

Mr. Mohandas said the district administration would study how best the recovered land could be utilised.

“We will examine if the land and the pond can be used for tourism promotion,” he said.
