Declare Uttara Kannada a hilly region: tribal mela

Correspondent

Sirsi: Uttara Kannada District Tribal and Backward Class Forum has urged the Government to declare the district as a “hilly district” and grant special package for its rapid and widespread development. The Tribal and Backward Class People’s Mela organised by the Uttara Kannada District Tribal and Backward Class Forum was held at the police grounds here on Thursday, to mark the completion of the forum’s 25 years of service.

AICC general secretary, Margaret Alva, who inaugurated the mela, said that efforts would be made to get the “hilly district” tag for Uttara Kannada with a view to implementing the Forest Dwellers Act and also to provide loan to Stree Shakti groups at 4 per cent interest rate.

Ms. Alva said that funds were being released every year for the welfare of the tribal people.
