Illicit arrack trade unearthed

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: In one of the biggest operations in recent years, the Excise Enforcement and Lottery Prohibition Wing of the State police unearthed a massive illicit arrack and liquor distilling trade, which was thriving on the outskirts of Bangalore.

The police on Wednesday conducted raids at Adigarakallahalli village, bordering Tamil Nadu, in Sarjapur police station limits. During the raids, the police found that bootleggers had created 35 underground tanks and stored 77,000 litres of illicit distilling wash, estimated at Rs. 11.5 lakh. According to Inspector-General of Police, Excise Enforcement and Lottery Prohibition Wing, S.K. Venugopal, the underground barrel-shaped tanks were of eight to 10 feet in diameter and 10 to 14 feet deep. The police used earth-moving equipment to unearth and destroy the tanks and the wash.

To hoodwink lawmen, the bootleggers had embedded such 12,000-litre tanks even in government land and public roads, Mr. Venugopal said in a press release.
