CUTTACK: Even as the central range Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) has expressed his inability to meet the demands of the city slum-dwellers, hundreds of slum inhabitants have been staging round-the-clock sit-in in front of his office since March 24 demanding proper rehabilitation. Two of the agitators are on hunger strike which entered the 12th day on Friday. “We would continue our dharna till the RDC sorted out our problem,” said All Orissa Jhopadpati Confederation president Brundaban Das Azad. He along with one Ram Chandra Patnaik is on hunger strike. The agitators claim that they have been staying in the slums along the Taladanda canal embankment since long, but all of a sudden, the district administration and the city civic body asked them to vacate the area. However, following the intervention of the High Court, the eviction drive was suspended for two months. “We suspect that the State government launched tirade against us only to facilitate the South Korean steel major Posco to draw water from the canal for its proposed 12 mt steel plant,” Mr. Azad said.
