Entrance test abolished in Puducherry

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry government on Friday decided to abolish the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to professional courses in the Union Territory.

Replying to a discussion on the issue, Minister for Education M.O.H.F. Shahjahan said the decision would come into force with immediate effect.

The discussion was based on the call attention motion moved by Members including A. Anbalagan (AIADMK), S.P. Sivakumar (DMK) and R.K.R. Anantharaman (PMK) on the “confused situation prevailing among the students as to whether admissions to professional colleges during coming year would be based on the CET or on the basis of academic marks as followed in Tamil Nadu.”

Mr.Shahjahan said the Tamil Nadu government had brought an Act to abolish the CET to ensure its proper implementation in the State. However, Puducherry had to seek the permission of the Centre and the President to bring forward such an Act, he pointed out.
