Rs. 3 crore spent on NREGP

A Correspondent

Kattappana: The 48 grama panchayats in Idukki district have spent an amount of Rs.3 crore under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

However, four panchayats failed to implement the scheme aimed at creating rural employment.

As per the project report, NREGP created 1,86,570 working days and Nedumkandam and Vandiperiyar grama panchayats spent the maximum amount under the scheme.

A total of Rs.2.38 crore was spent for wages to unskilled workers and Rs.14.1 lakh was utilised for purchasing working implements.

The salary for engaging the staff in the panchayats was Rs.44.34 lakh, says the report.

While Santhanpara, Alakkode, Velliyamattom and Kumarapuram panchayats spent no amount under NREGP, Nedumkandam and Vandiperiyar panchayats spent Rs.32.44 lakh and Rs.23 lakh respectively.

Though, 1,23,000 families registered under the scheme, only 86,245 work cards were used.

The project report also shows that in the crisis-hit tea estate belts of Vandiperiyar, Upputhara and Elappara panchayats, NREGP was an alternative for generating employment to unskilled labourers in the estates.
