BJP forms poll campaign panel

Poojary’s remark on Hogenakkal issue criticised

BANGALORE: Along with commencement of the process of selection of candidates, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday constituted a 24-member campaign committee headed by State unit president D.V. Sadananda Gowda to monitor the party’s poll campaign.

In addition to the 24 members, the committee comprises BJP national vice-president Yashwant Sinha and general secretaries Arun Jaitley and H.N. Ananth Kumar and the former Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa as special invitees.

The members of the committee include K.S. Eshwarappa, R. Ashok, Karunakara Reddy, Shobha Karandlaje, D. H. Shankaramurthy, Basavaraj Bommai and actor Shruthi among others.

On Saturday, the party is expected to announce the election management committee in addition to commencing workshops regarding the preparations for polls for some of the party wings.

On Friday, the BJP State leaders continued their close-door consultations at a resort on the city outskirts with the district units’ leaders regarding selection of candidates to contest the ensuing elections.

The BJP took exception to Congress leader Janardhana Poojary’s allegation that the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) were responsible for the mess related to the controversy over Hogenakkal drinking water project taken up by Tamil Nadu.

BJP spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar alleged that Mr. Poojary was making such baseless allegations for his own political existence. The Congress leader was not only trying to break the unity of Karnataka, but also weakening the State’s combined effort to protect its interests with respect to the sharing of Cauvery river water.
