CPI(M) will stand united, says Kodiyeri

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan says party has succeeded in tackling factionalism.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who was elevated to the CPI(M) Polit Bureau at the 19th party Congress, which concluded in Coimbatore on Thursday, has said that the CPI(M) in Kerala will stand united regardless of the attempts by opponents of the party and a section of the media to create divide among party leaders.

Chatting with reporters on his arrival here on Friday after the party Congress, Mr. Balakrishnan said the mandate before the entire CPI(M) leadership in Kerala was to maintain unity and strengthen the party and the LDF government.

“There is no hierarchy in the party and what it has is a collective leadership and I am part of that,” he said.

He said the party Congress had approved a document with clear guidelines about the functioning of the party and the government. The guidelines were applicable to all the three State governments headed by the CPI(M).

The task before them was to function in tune with the changing global and national situation without landing in confusion regarding their priorities, he said. Asked whether he thought he would be able to discharge his responsibilities as party Polit Bureau member while holding office as the State Home Minister, Mr. Balakrishnan said there were guidelines for that as well and that he would go by these guidelines.

On factionalism, he said the party had succeeded in tackling factionalism in a big way and that there was no question of allowing a throwback to the situation earlier. The party had the duty to discharge the responsibilities placed on it by the people when they elected the LDF government under the leadership of V.S. Achuthanandan, he said.

To the Opposition’s criticism that the party Congress had affected governance, he said there was no merit in the allegation as the administrative decisions could be taken sitting anywhere in the country and Coimbatore was not too far.
