First in India: executive training centre at IHM-B

It has been set up on the lines of American Hospitality Schools

The EDC will have a restaurant and a 30-room hotel for students to learn the trade
Food Craft Institute wiill train people from rural areas for the hospitality sector

BANGALORE: In an effort to widen its scope in the field of higher education, the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition (IHM-B) here launched the Executive Development Centre (EDC), which will provide a hands-on training for its students. The EDC at IHM-B, located on SJ Polytechnic campus, is the first of its kind in the country, which has been set up on the lines of top American Hospitality Schools.

Tourism Secretary I.M. Vittalamurthy told presspersons here on Thursday that the EDC has been set up at a cost of Rs. 5 crore, of which the Union Government has contributed Rs. 4 crore. “Shortly, the EDC will have a restaurant and a live 30-room hotel where students will learn the trade,” he added.

With the launch of EDC, he said, the institute will be able to cover professional development programmes, executive MBA, PG and doctoral research in hospitality and restaurant management, executive development programmes, distance and online education. At present, the IHM-B offers a three-year degree in hotel and hospitality administration.

The Food Craft Institute at Halebeedu, established to train people from rural areas for the hospitality industry will commence operations from this academic year.

Mr. Vittalamurthy said that the Union Government has granted permission for the institute and is being set up at a cost of Rs. 4 crore. The institute has been registered already.

“The institute will have the capacity to train up to 120 students for six-month diploma courses in food and beverages, front office, housekeeping and cookery,” said Mr. Vittalamurthy.

“There is a huge demand for trained personnel in the new category of hotels coming up. Residents of Hassan and surrounding region would be benefited by the institute.”

The State Government had proposed to set up food and craft institutes in Hassan and Dharwad districts.

“While the Union Government has accepted the proposal for Hassan district, we are hopeful of securing permission for Dharwad this year,” he said.
