Swiss Consulate inaugurated in Bangalore

Bangalore: “We are keen on developing relations with India, with respect to science and technology, research and encouraging cultural ties,” said Dominique Dreyer, Ambassador of Switzerland.

He was speaking at a function organised to inaugurate the Honorary Swiss Consulate here on Friday.

Dr. Dreyer said that this year, Switzerland and India were celebrating “60 years of Friendship”. “Switzerland was the first country to sign a Treaty of Friendship with India, a year after she gained Independence. As part of the celebrations, we have organised several programmes,” he said.

Cultural programmes highlighting Swiss culture have been organised in Mumbai and New Delhi. “The cultural section of the Swiss Embassy is taking care of the celebrations. We plan to have a fashion show, showcasing our textile industry. India is an important client for us. We will also soon launch a project to promote vocational training in India. If things go well, we may also launch a common postage stamp with India,” he added.

Peter E. Specker, Consul General of Switzerland, Mumbai, said that there are around 1,000 Swiss nationals in India and over 30 in Karnataka.

“We are very happy that our Swiss agencies are helping the State Government establish a civil airport in Bangalore. We hope to better our relations with India and help each other in the areas of research, biotechnology, education and others,” he said.

He added that this month, a delegation from Switzerland would visit Mumbai, New Delhi, Mysore and Bangalore, to participate in investment seminars.

“The seminar has been organised to invite Indian companies to set up shop in Switzerland. There are many advantages. Due to its location, the companies will have easy access to all countries in Europe,” he added.
