Two arrested and a countrymade gun seized

Staff Reporter

ARIYALUR: A police team on Friday arrested two more persons and seized a countrymade gun in connection with the reported attempt made by a group on the life of the president of Ponparappi village P.R. Pandian about 10 days ago.

In a pre-dawn operation, the team secured Tamilvannan (43) from the cashew forest near Unjini village, and Kasinathan of Koppliliyankudikadu to whom the former had given the weapon.

Eleven taken into custody

So far, eleven persons have been arrested in two operations and one person had surrendered a few days ago.

All the 12 have been remanded to judicial custody, the Deputy Inspector General of Tiruchi Range, Ashok Kumar Das told presspersons.

The Ariyalur SPs Prem Anand Sinha and M.S. Muthsamy were also present on the occasion.

On March 27, the Senthurai police, who had registered a case of attempt to murder, arrested five persons – Murugan (35), Karuppiah (20) and Raja (20) of Unjini village, Puthiya Raja (22) of Edayakurichi and Muthukumar (28) of Venkamedu in Karur district and seized a countrymade bomb, 400 gm gunpowder, 18 empty cartridges, 40 match boxes, 100 gms of cycle iron balls and 10 safety fuse wires. On March 31, another accused, Arivalagan of Ponparappi had surrendered.

Interrogation

On sustained interrogation, the police team narrowed down on Ramkumar (33) of Ponparappi, Pandian (27) of Keelakuvagam, Suresh (23) of Kuvagam, and Anbuselvan (28) of Murugankudikadu village in Cuddalore district earlier this week. Police took possession of a motorcycle without number plate, and three aruvals and seven countrymade bombs kept concealed at Keelarayapuram, on Thursday, based on the confession of Arivalagan. The accused had reportedly connived to eliminate the panchayat president at the behest of Ramkumar, whose wife is an ex-president, police said.
