CHENNAI: The Prison department informed the Madras High Court on Friday that Ganesan, a convict who was earlier confined in the Central Prison, Vellore, has been transferred to the Central Prison-I, Puzhal. This followed a court order on two habeas corpus petitions filed by advocates R.K.Ayyappan and G. Haribabu who said Ganesan was being kept in solitary confinement and tortured; he was not even allowed to meet his advocates. A Division Bench of Justices D. Murugesan and V. Periya Karuppiah had asked the State government to consider shifting the convict from the Central Prison , Vellore, to any other prison, preferably the Central Prison, Puzhal. In his counter filed on Friday, the Superintendent of Central Prison, Vellore, denied the allegation that the prisoner was kept in solitary confinement. For his protection, he was kept in the Anna block first segment that had cellular accommodation. He was also given morning food as per the prison rules. Meanwhile, Henri Tiphagne, executive director, People’s Watch, Madurai, filed a petition seeking permission to intervene. In the petition, filed by counsel Sudha Ramalingam, he submitted that an advocate, Selvi alias Selvarani, who met Ganesan’s mother Mangalakshmi recently, was “under constant threat, her phone was tapped, she was shadowed and veiled threats were given.” Ganesan’s mother had handed over to Selvi some of the communication material between her son and daughter-in-law Nathiya, and a notebook. He said he was filing the letters along with the affidavit.
