dated April 5, 1958: Village economy

Prime Minister Nehru, while laying the foundation stone for the Punjab legislature chamber in Chandigarh on April 3, called upon the people of India to continue their march forward, undeterred by any obstacles or hardships, towards the goal of making India strong, united and prosperous. He said, “We have confidence in our inherent strength and we are determined to go ahead without looking backward.” Mr. Nehru made a strong plea for improving the village economy and said that the reconstruction of the country would not be complete unless its five lakh villages were properly developed and living standards of villages raised. A village needed a panchayat, a school, a co-operative society and every effort should be made to provide these three things.
