Bar: ensure safety, peace in Karnataka

Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: The All-India Bar Association (AIBA) has expressed concern over violence in Karnataka and appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene immediately to resolve the Hogenakkal project row between that State and Tamil Nadu.

Violent protests

In a memorandum, AIBA chairman Adish Aggarwala and vice-chairman S. Prabhakaran said certain organisations in Karnataka, to achieve their political ambitions, were resorting to violent agitations against implementation of the drinking water project. They threatened Tamils and damaged their property. Tamils were also being humiliated by anti-national elements.

The AIBA said that as per Article 21 of the Constitution citizens had a fundamental right to safe and clean drinking water.

The conduct of certain organisations in Karnataka in opposing the implementation of the project and fomenting resentment in Tamil Nadu against the people of Karnataka would be injurious to the unity and integrity of the country.

The memorandum requested the Prime Minister to ensure the safety of all people in Karnataka, irrespective of their language, to maintain inter-State harmony and public peace.

It urged the Union Government to ban, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, all those organisations in Karnataka which were indulging in violence.
