Tarundeep in line for bronze

KOLKATA: Veteran Tarundeep Rai, ‘rested’ before the Asian championship trials in September, owing to a poor performance at the World championship, proved a point at the first archery World Cup meet at Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic.

The Army archer from Sikkim moved into bronze medal contention after a series of good performances in the individual recurve section that took him to the semifinals where he lost to top seed Wei Chang Kuo of Chinese Taipei 106-108.

He would take on World championship runner-up Baljinima Tsyrempilov of Russia on Saturday. Rai’s best showing as of date is a fourth at the Madrid World meet in 2005.

Mangal Singh Champia, securing second spot in the qualifier, was in great form but lost in the quarterfinals to Ilario di Buo of Italy in the tiebreaker.

The two tied 107-all and in the one arrow shoot off, Champia hit an 8 as against Buo’s 9. Jhano Hansdah made it to the quarterfinals of the women’s compound bow event.

The 21st ranked Indian lost to fourth-seeded Amandine Bouillot of France 108-109.

The rest of the 16-member squad fared poorly, the worst being World Cup champion Dola Banerjee falling in the first round. She scored a pathetic 84 out of a possible 120 points as against her opponent’s 95.
