Four students injured as sand-laden lorry hits bus

TAMBARAM: Four students were injured, two of them seriously, when a speeding sand-laden lorry hit a bus belonging to Sri Krishna Engineering College at Panakappakkam near Padappai about 15 km from here on Friday morning.
The accident that took place near the college on Vandalur-Wallajahbad Radial Road, sparked a protest from students. They squatted on the road urging the authorities to curb the menace of rash driving and overspeeding by lorries transporting sand .
The bus was just a few hundred metres away from the college when the lorry collided with it . In the impact, some students seated on the last two rows were injured.
They were rushed to a private hospital in Chromepet. While two of them were treated for injuries and discharged, Gowtham Prakash, a first-year computer science engineering student, was admitted to the hospital. Harish, another first-year computer science engineering student, who was injured, was admitted to a private hospital in Manapakkam.
The students were joined in their protest by residents of Vaippur, Serappanancheri and Panapakkam villages . Stating that the menace of overspeeding and rash driving had assumed huge proportions, residents said they were living in a perpetual fear.
The 35-km-long radial road had become risky owing to sand lorries. Overtaking at curves and from wrong sides, travelling too close to the road margins and harsh braking and continuous honking had all made life miserable, the residents said. The accident took place around 8.30 a.m. Shocked at the nature of injuries to their four friends, students pelted the lorry with stones, damaged its windshield and deflated its tyres. They squatted on the road for a while, but left after personnel from Sriperumbudur Police Range threatened that they would be lathicharged and arrested if they did not disperse.
