BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday claimed that the present political situation in the country was conducive to its interests and hostile to the United Progressive Alliance. Addressing a meeting of prominent State BJP leaders here on the preparations for the elections to the Karnataka Assembly, party general secretary Arun Jaitley said the UPA government’s failure to check price rise would benefit the BJP. For the first time after the Green Revolution, the country had been pushed to an era of food shortages by the UPA due to its wrong policies. While the people had to pay more for food products, farmers were not getting remunerative prices. This phenomenon would go against the UPA and benefit the BJP, he claimed. Mr. Jaitley said the Congress was stuck on the Sethusamudram issue. “It has put its hand into the issue and does not know how to withdraw it. If it withdraws from the issue, then the DMK will hit back. If it does not, then various sections of the people will hit back.” The Congress was facing a similar situation with respect to the Sachar Committee report. “The party will annoy several sections of the people if it implements the report. If it decides against implementing the report, then it will be annoying Muslims,” he said.
