Central team assesses crop loss

Holds discussion with State Ministers and officials in Thrissur


Visits rain-hit areas in Thrissur and Malappuram

Team members say the destruction is heavy


Thrissur: The Central team deputed to study crop loss in the recent summer rain in the State visited the affected paddy fields in Thrissur on Saturday.

The team, led by A.K. Yadav, Joint Secretary (Home), visited Kanimangalam, Pallppuram, Eanamavu and Ponnamutha, where large areas of paddy fields about to be harvested had been damaged.

Earlier, Collector M. Beena informed the team that paddy crop in over 6,000 hectares was damaged, causing a loss of Rs.30.20 crore affecting 14,002 farmers.

The district received 225 mm of rainfall over a 10 days beginning March 13. — PTI

Malappuram visit

Staff Reporter writes from Malappuram: The team visited the kole fields at Ponnani in Malappuram district on Saturday afternoon .

The team members visited Neelayil and Srayilkadavu in Nannamukku village and Koolan in Alankode village. They were accompanied by the district’s revenue officials led by Collector M.C. Mohandas. The revenue officials explained to them the gravity of destruction and loss. After inspecting the destroyed paddy and meeting the farmers, the Central team commented that the “destruction was heavy and severe.”

The revenue officials estimated a loss of Rs.8 crore. The State government had already given Rs.60 lakh in aid to the affected farmers. Mr. Mohandas said it would soon be disbursed to the farmers.

Special Correspondent adds from Thiruvananthapuram: The team which returned to Thrissur later had a wrap up meeting.

It was attended by Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran and Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohamed Kutty, and officials, among others.
