Database on road network being developed

CHENNAI: The Highways department is developing a comprehensive Road Management System (RMS) that would include a ‘Road Asset Information Database’ of the core road network and a computerised Pavement Management System (PMS) to enable more efficient planning.

The system would provide a web-based road inventory of information on State highways and major district roads.

The project has been given as contract to consultants Mouchel Parkman-SPAN(JV) as part of the World Bank-funded Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project (TNRSP).

The PMS would predict the unconstrained maintenance budget and select candidate roads within the available budget based on the ‘lifecycle cost approach’ analysis,’ according to information provided on the Highways Department website.

The project would also involve setting up of a traffic and bridge database.

It is likely to enable better assessment of budget requirements, computerised maintenance planning and condition of the road network.

It would also make it possible to use computerised planning tools in the selection of candidate projects.

The cost of the project when it was given as contract was set at Rs.6.89 crore and the duration at 40 months.

An 18-month period was granted for development and implementation, followed by an implementation support period.
